Expect a deep dive on Halo 5’s matchmaking infrastructure, probably including TrueSkill 2 optimizations and discussions, and maybe even hints or brief tidbits on Halo: Infinite’s systems. Wait time? There are several commonly held best practices on how to matchmake for engagement across the industry, some of which contradict each other, but little to no data-driven evidence to support them. The following will show how to effectively test matchmaking approaches and show real examples and data from a popular first-person shooter. The results show that not all practices are actually important, while others are critical. The second talk is focused on how machine learning can tremendously help online-driven multiplayer games. The results give better matches in less time and are customized to each player’s characteristics and each region’s real-time concurrency as it changes over time. Both talks will be livestreamed on the GDC Twitch channel.
Halo 5: Guardians Matchmaking and Custom Games Will Run on Dedicated Servers
Halo 5: Guardians ‘ online multiplayer mode exclusively uses dedicated servers, even when playing custom games. This news comes by way of executive producer Josh Holmes, who responded to a question about dedicated servers on the Beyond Entertainment forums. There is no P2P.
How your Halo 5: Guardians beta feedback is changing sprint, weapons, and is making to Spartan abilities, weapons, and matchmaking.
What do you think? The new gametype is Breakout, a 4v4 stand-off made up of 6 rounds where everybody only has one life and your goal is to eliminate the enemy team. How hard is it to match people together with a similar skill rank? I just lost 4 matches straight because of this. I normally would think that I just suck, but each time, my entire team went horribly negative and the other team completely swamped us me having most of the kills.
Every time I spawned, I was less than 5 yards away from an enemy and was killed, too. Plus nobody went for the power weapons. But in this case, it was me vs 4 enemies for power weapons.
Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta hands-on impressions
Earlier in the development process, the development team at Industries got a lot of attention from shooter fans when it revealed that it had plans to allow multiplayer fans to actually choose the datacenter they want to use in order to get the best possible performance. Now it seems that the company has decided that the feature would introduce too many problems with the matchmaking process and has decided to use an automatic location detection service that allocates them to the nearest and best cluster of servers.
Josh Holmes, who leads development on Halo 5: Guardians, explains in an interview with BestGameEver that, “We have been running closed beta tests consistently over the months since beta to optimize our matchmaking, and QoS Quality of Service detection and we are very happy with how it performs today. It seems that the main reason for the decision is that skill level plays such a big role in the shooter that player choice might lead to big imbalances in the long-term, as a dedicated number of players becomes too good for the rest of the population in a particular datacenter.
Halo 5: Guardians will rely on its multiplayer for long-term popularity and it will be interesting whether the matchmaking system that Industries offers is robust enough to make sure that gamers find matches quickly and with no obvious disparities between those involved. Competitive gamers might be tempted to play a little Warzone, the new Halo 5: Guardians mode that combines PvP and PvE on massive maps, but they will spend most of their time in Arena, which is designed to offer an eSports focused experience.

A beta in the guise of Halo 5 is rare nowadays. More often than not, multiplayer betas have become more of an online infrastructure stress-test than a true-to-form beta. While the term beta test has been used in all different contexts by developers and publishers, the original intent of a beta was to see how a game preforms under real-world circumstances. However, because many betas now launch just a f ew months before a game releases , many question whether the feedback actually helps let alone if it is heard. For Halo 5: Guardians , the December beta test was, for all intents and purposes, just that: a test. They also agreed that there were some areas that the online experience could improve, and this week talked a little bit about that.
First and foremost, wanted to thank players for participating in the Halo 5 beta test. The experience was pretty popular, and the developer shared a few statistics — provided in infographic form — to show just how much time was dedicated to the beta test. Check it out below. A lot of criticism has been rightfully lobbed at Industries over their handling of the Master Chief Collection on Xbox One. Even now, while working close to optimally, the package is something of a mess. But there is good cause for this beta to take place so far out from release because Halo 5 looks to shake the foundations of the series multiplayer to its core. During the three week span that i had the beta running, I played roughly 50 matches, developing some opinions on the direction the series is heading.
I tell you this so that you have a basis for my likes and dislikes of the beta and also as an easy out for those of you that think Bungie and i ruined Halo after Halo 2. On its surface Halo 5 looks like every other Halo game.
